Parts Work

Parts work is a family of therapy approaches that treat the mind as naturally made of parts: the inner critic, the protector, the pleaser, the one who wants to burn it all down. Rather than pathology, multiplicity is the premise; the work is helping the parts trust the person at the center.

You already speak parts language: "part of me wants to quit, part of me is terrified to." Parts work takes that everyday truth seriously. Each part, including the ones causing trouble, is understood as trying to protect you in a way that once made sense, and parts drop extreme strategies when they are finally understood.

The best-known formal model is Internal Family Systems, which maps parts into protectors and exiles and works toward Self-led inner leadership. Elements of parts thinking also appear inside many other approaches.

Common questions

Does having parts mean something is wrong with me?

No. Parts work starts from the position that a multiple mind is a normal mind. The question is not whether you have parts but how well they cooperate, and that is what the work improves.

Is parts work evidence-based?

The research base is younger than CBT’s but growing, and clinicians widely use parts approaches for trauma, anxiety, and self-criticism. Ask your therapist how they integrate it and why for your situation.
