Parent Guidance
Parent guidance is focused clinical work with parents, sometimes alongside a child’s own therapy and sometimes instead of it, on the parenting strategies, routines, and family dynamics affecting a child or teen. Changing the system around a child is often the fastest way to change things for the child.
For younger children especially, parents have more daily leverage than any therapist with one hour a week. Parent guidance puts clinical insight where the leverage is: how to respond to big feelings, how to hold limits without escalation, how to repair after hard moments, and how two parents get on the same page.
It is a standard part of how child therapy works here, not a judgment on parenting. The families who use it most are usually the ones already doing the most thinking.
Common questions
Does parent guidance mean the therapist thinks the parents are the problem?
No. It means parents are the most powerful lever. Children live inside family systems, and adjusting the system is often kinder and faster than asking a young child to change on their own.
Do both parents need to attend parent guidance?
It helps when both caregivers participate, especially for consistency across households, but it is not required. Useful work happens with one committed parent, and formats flex around custody and schedules.
