Attunement

Attunement is a therapist’s capacity to accurately sense what is happening for you emotionally, often before you have put it into words, and to respond in a way that fits. It is felt as being genuinely understood rather than merely listened to, and it is one of the foundations that makes the rest of therapy work.

You notice attunement mostly by its effects: the therapist slows down when something lands heavily, catches the thing you almost said, or names a feeling a beat before you find the word. None of that is mind reading. It is trained, deliberate attention to tone, pacing, and body language alongside the words.

Attunement matters because therapy runs on safety. When your nervous system registers that the person across from you is tracking accurately, it becomes possible to say the harder things. It is part of what you are evaluating, without needing any vocabulary for it, in your first session.

Common questions

Is attunement the same as empathy?

They are related but not identical. Empathy is feeling with someone; attunement is the moment-to-moment accuracy of tracking and responding. A therapist can be warmly empathic and still miss what is actually happening for you. Attunement is the precision.

What if my therapist does not feel attuned to me?

Say so, directly. Ruptures and misses are normal, and repairing them is itself therapeutic work. If the misattunement is persistent after naming it, that is useful information about fit.
