In plain terms
Neurodivergent-affirming therapy
Neurodivergent-affirming therapy starts from the view that being autistic, ADHD, or otherwise neurodivergent is a difference in how a mind works, not a defect to be fixed. The work is about support, self-understanding, and accommodations that fit your wiring, rather than pushing you to mask or perform as neurotypical. Your goals lead, and the approach flexes to you.
A different starting point
A lot of traditional therapy quietly assumes a neurotypical baseline and treats difference as something to correct. Affirming therapy drops that assumption. It does not try to train an autistic person to stop stimming or an ADHD brain to work like everyone else. It helps you understand how your mind works, reduce the exhaustion of masking, and build a life and environment that fit you, while still treating any anxiety, burnout, or low mood that comes along.
What it looks like in practice
Sessions may adjust the sensory setup, the pacing, and the communication style to what works for you. The work often covers self-understanding, boundaries, burnout, and co-occurring anxiety. For younger clients this extends to child and teen therapy that works with the family rather than trying to make a kid mask better.
